-makes up a step of the intrinsic pathway
-formed via activation of Factor XI --> this reaction is catalyzed by Factors XIIa & IIa (thrombin)
-Factor XIa (along with tissue factor (Factor III) & Factor VIIa) in turn catalyzes the activation of Factor IX to IXa
